Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest.
Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Nigeria, Uganda.

Nigeria east to Zaire River basin. Purported presence in Upper Guinea forests west of Nigeria requires confirmation.

Subspecies
Apparently fairly close to Red-chested Goshawk (Accipiter toussenelii) and African Goshawk (Accipiter tachiro), but distinguished by smaller size and long inner claw. Birds of western Zaire sometimes separated in subspecies beniensis, on grounds of larger size.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- castanilius Bonaparte, 1853 - Nigeria to the Congo River basin.
- beniensis Lönnberg, 1917 - Eastern DR Congo.
