Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level - 3,000 m.

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Cote dIvoire, Central African Republic, Congo, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Lesotho.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Red-chested Goshawk (Accipiter toussenelii), with which often considered conspecific, but differs in size, coloration and characteristic display flight.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • unduliventer (Rüppell, 1836)   -  Ethiopian highlands.
  • croizati Desfayes, 1974   -  South-western Ethiopia.
  • sparsimfasciatus (Reichenow, 1895)   -  Somalia, through eastern Africa, Zanzibar and south-eastern Zaire to northern Angola, northern Zambia, northern Malawi and northern Mozambique.
  • pembaensis Benson & Elliott, HFI, 1975   -  Pemba I (Tanzania).
  • tachiro (Daudin, 1800)   -  Southern Angola, southern Zambia, southern Malawi and southern Mozambique south to South Africa.
