Birds and insects but mainly introduced mammals (rats, mice and tenrecs).

Voice
A grating 'kiay kioo' uttered near breeding site. A 'kai pi-pi-pi-pi-pi' uttered by male during display flights.

Subspecies
Circus maillardi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Reunion Marsh-harrier (Circus maillardi) and Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourus) following Simmons (2000).

Forms superspecies with Western Marsh-harrier (Circus aeruginosus), African Marsh-harrier (Circus ranivorus), Swamp Harrier (Circus approximans) and Eastern Marsh-harrier (Circus spilonotus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

maillardi Verreaux, 1862 - Reunion I.
macrosceles Newton, 1863 - Madagascar, Comoro Is.
