Vagrant to Guinea, Sierra Leone.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Painted Sandgrouse (Pterocles indicus). Also closely related to Double-banded Sandgrouse (Pterocles bicinctus) and Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse (Pterocles lichtensteinii).
Birds to the east of L Chad were separated as subspecies lowei.
No subspecies.
