Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse (Pterocles lichtensteinii) and Painted Sandgrouse (Pterocles indicus). Also closely related to Four-banded Sandgrouse (Pterocles quadricinctus).

Birds from northern Namibia and northern Botswana were separated as subspecies chobiensis, those of northern Zimbabwe and Mozambique as usheri, and those of western Namibia as elizabethae.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

ansorgei (Benson, 1947) - South-western Angola.
bicinctus Temminck, 1815 - Namibia, Botswana, north-western Cape Province (South Africa).
multicolor Hartert, 1908 - Southern and eastern Zambia, southern Malawi and western Mozambique, south to Transvaal.
