Nest
Saucer-shaped and deep, composed of plant stems, dried grasses or rushes, on the ground in a clump of reeds or under a low bush.
Eggs (Guide)
Usually 5 - 7; glossy, pale green with red, brown or purple blotches and small spots; oval; about 44 x 30 mm.
Young
Precocial, nidifugous.
Subspecies
Was previously placed in the genus Gallinula.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Dusky Moorhen (Gallinula tenebrosa) which has white lateral under tail-coverts, a slimmer build, a finer bill which is never mostly green, has a pointed tail and wing-points that do not extend beyond the tertials and vagrants with Tasmanian Native-hen (Tribonyx mortierii).
