Habitat
Subantarctic grassland, shrubland, freshwater marshes and pools, permanent rivers, streams and creeks.
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 9,000 (2010) and increasing.
Status EX
Became extinct at the end of the 19th century, probably due to predation by rats and cats, but possibly also due to habitat destruction and hunting. In 1956, seven birds were introduced.

Voice
A sharp 'krrik'. Various calls like Gough Moorhen (Gallinula comeri).
Subspecies
Tristan Moorhen (Gallinula nesiotis) and Gough Moorhen (Gallinula comeri) (Collar and Stuart 1985) have been lumped as Gallinula nesiotis following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993) and supported by Groenenburg et al. (2008) and Groenenburg et al. (2009).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- nesiotis ! P. Sclater, 1861 - Tristan da Cunha recently extinct.
- comeri ! (Allen, 1892) - Gough Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Gough Moorhen (Gallinula comeri).
