Habitat
Rushy marsh vegetation, open marsh with mosses and low herbs. At 4,080 m.
Peru (B).

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat degradation by pollution, poor water management, flooding, predation by Pampas Cats (Oncifelis colocolo pajeros) are the main threats.

Voice
Single 'chirrr' notes. Males deliver a succession of 'chic' notes ending by falling slurr. Females utter a low-pitched 'croo-croo-o'.
Subspecies
Laterallus jamaicensis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Black Rail (Laterallus jamaicensis) and Junin Rail (Laterallus tuerosi) following Fjeldså (1983), contra SACC (2005), pending the outcome of investigation into the taxonomy of this group by SACC.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Black Rail (Laterallus jamaicensis).
No subspecies.
