Subspecies
Populations of South Africa sometimes treated as separate species, Eupodotis barrowii. This form has alternatively been known as Eupodotis cafra, but due to confusion in nomenclature with Denham's Bustard (Neotis denhami), name cafra was officially suppressed. Slight differences from northern birds in plumage and voice probably do not justify treatment as separate species. Birds from Eritrea normally ascribed to nominate senegalensis, but more likely to belong to canicollis.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • senegalensis (Vieillot, 1820)   -  Southwestern Mauritania and Guinea, east to Central African Republic, central Sudan. Possibly also Eritrea.
  • canicollis (Reichenow, 1881)   -  Ethiopia south to north-eastern Tanzania.
  • erlangeri (Reichenow, 1905)   -  Southern Kenya and western Tanzania.
  • mackenziei White, CMN, 1945   -  Eastern Gabon to southern Democratic Republic of the Congo, eastern Angola and western Zambia.
  • barrowii (Gray, JE, 1829)   -  Botswana, South Africa, and Swaziland. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eupodotis barrowii.
