Genus sometimes merged with Otis. Present species may form parapatric species pair with Heuglin's Bustard (Neotis heuglinii). Normally considered to include form "burchellii" of uncertain status, known only by type specimen from eastern Sudan. In past, present species was at times known as Neotis cafra, but due to confusion in nomenclature with White-bellied Bustard (Eupodotis senegalensis), name cafra was officially suppressed.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- denhami (Children, 1826) - South-western Mauritania and Senegambia east to northern Uganda and Ethiopia.
- jacksoni Bannerman, 1930 - Kenya and western Tanzania south to Zambia, northern Botswana and northern Zimbabwe; southern Congo and western Zaire; south-western Angola.
- stanleyi (Gray, JE, 1831) - South Africa and Swaziland.
