Habitat
Primary forest, forest edges, along forest roads and sometimes clearings where native trees remain. From - 1,600 m.

Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.
Status CR
Habitat destruction and fragmentation through deforestation for agriculture, hunting, are the main threats.

Voice
A uniform territorial 'coo', higher-pitched in female. Irregular, frequent repetitions.
Subspecies
Very distinctive genus of uncertain affinities, perhaps most closely allied to Gallicolumba. Some early workers placed the species in its own family, Didunculidae. Single species survives, although a larger, extinct member of the genus has been found in cave deposits on 'Eua (southern Tonga).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Metallic Pigeon (Columba vitiensis) and Pacific Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pacifica) are slimmer and longer tailed with no chestnut on upperparts.
