Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, from sea level to 600 m, mangroves and occasionally gardens. Usually only on small islands and coastal forest of larger islands.
Papua New Guinea (B), Solomon Islands (B).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pink-headed Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula rosacea ), Christmas Island Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula whartoni ) and Grey Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pickeringii ).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
rhodinolaema (Sclater, PL, 1877) - Islands off northern coast of New Guinea east to Umboi, also Admiralty Is, St Matthias Group (Mussau and Emira) and New Hanover.
vanwyckii (Cassin, 1862) - New Britain and Witu Is, and New Ireland (Bismarck Archipelago).
postrema Hartert, 1926 - D'Entrecasteaux Is (Amphlett Group), Woodlark Group (Egum Atoll, Alcester I) and Louisiade Archipelago (Deboyne Is, Misima, Bramble Haven).
pistrinaria Bonaparte, 1855 - Lihir, Feni and Green Is Seast through Solomon Is.
