Locally in mountains of Mexico (south-eastern San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo and central Veracruz to Guerrero, northern and south-central Oaxaca and northern and southern Chiapas) to central Guatemala, western El Salvador, north-western Honduras and north-western Nicaragua.

Subspecies
Like most of congeners, formerly placed in genus Oreopeleia. Sometimes considered conspecific with Lined Quail-Dove (Zentrygon linearis), and the two may form a superspecies.
