Abundance (Guide)

Endemic. Common, but fluctuating with nomadic populations moving to the coastal south-east when the interior is in drought.

Habitat
Dry grassy woodlands, semi-arid grasslands, spinifex, dry mulga and similar dry shrublands.

Range (Guide)
Australia (B).

Introduced to Puerto Rico.

Australia generally except the coastal districts of south-eastern Australia and South Australia, and sparsely distributed in the south-west of Western Australia.

Habits
Usually in pairs or small flocks. Never too far from water.

Food
Seeds of grasses and herbaceous plants, procured from the ground.

Voice
An alternating, low-high, low-high, 'coor-cooo, coor-cooo' or a level-pitched 'coo-cooo, coo-cooo'. Also a drawn-out 'quottr'.

Generally August - December, but highly variable in response to rainfall.

Nest
A frail structure composed of thin twigs and grasses, in the fork of a low tree or bush, and sometimes on the top of a stump.

Eggs (Guide)
2; smooth, white; ellipsoidal; about 20 x 15 mm. Incubation: about 13 days; by both sexes.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 12 - 14 days.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
None but at a distance or when flushed possibly with Peaceful Dove (Geopelia placida). At a distance feeding birds might be confused with Bourke's Parrot (Neopsephotus bourkii).
