Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, dry forest, arable land. From 300 - 2,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam, China (mainland), Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Timor-Leste (B) (NB), Vietnam.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Black-billed Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia nigrirostris) and Mackinlay's Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia mackinlayi).

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • assimilis Hume, 1874   -  Myanmar (Karennee and Shandoung south to Muleyit, southern Shan States) and south-central China (southern Yunnan) to west, north-western and north-eastern Thailand.
  • engelbachi Delacour, 1928   -  North-western Vietnam (western Tonkin) and northern Laos.
  • malayana Chasen & Kloss, 1931   -  Peninsular Malaysia.
  • simalurensis Richmond, 1902   -  Simeulue I.
  • sumatrana Robinson & Kloss, 1919   -  Sumatra.
  • nana Stresemann, 1913   -  Borneo including Sibatik I.
  • ruficeps (Temminck, 1834)   -  Java and Bali.
  • orientalis Hartert, 1896   -  Lesser Sundas, on Lombok, Sumbawa, Komodo, Flores, Pantar, Sumba and Timor.
