Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Black-billed Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia nigrirostris) and Little Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia ruficeps). Subspecies krakari has been regarded as invalid.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

goodsoni Ramsay, 1878 - Admiralty and St Matthias Is, Squally, Watom (off north-eastern New Britain) and Witu Is. Also Talasea district of west-central New Britain.
krakari Rothschild and Hartert, 1915 - Karkar I.
arossi Tristram, 1879 - Solomon Is.
mackinlayi Ramsay, 1878 - Santa Cruz Is, Banks Is and Vanuatu.
