Subspecies
Closely related to Red-eyed Dove (Streptopelia semitorquata). Also related to Eurasian Collared-dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and Barbary Dove (Streptopelia roseogrisea). Includes Streptopelia fulvopectoralis, known from a single juvenile specimen.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
shelleyi (Salvadori, 1893) - Mauritania and Senegambia to southern Niger and central Nigeria.
logonensis (Reichenow, 1921) - L Chad east to southern Sudan, north-eastern and eastern Zaire and western and northern Uganda.
decipiens (Hartlaub & Finsch, 1870) - Sudan (Darfur), northern and central Ethiopia and north-western Somalia.
elegans (Zedlitz, 1913) - Southern Ethiopia, southern Somalia and northern and eastern Kenya.
perspicillata (Fischer, GA & Reichenow, 1884) - Western Kenya and central Tanzania.
ambigua (Barboza du Bocage, 1881) - Eastern Angola, south-eastern Zaire, Zambia and Malawi to R Zambezi and R Limpopo and adjacent lowlands.
