Apparently closely related to Metallic Pigeon (Columba vitiensis), with which it is sympatric in some places.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Metallic Pigeon (Columba vitiensis) which is similarly iridescent black but with pure white throat, New Britain Bronzewing (Henicophaps foersteri) which is brownish with iridescence only on wing-coverts and white throat and Chestnut-bellied Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula brenchleyi) which has vinaceous underparts and pale grey restricted to cap.
