Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Large-tailed Nightjar (Caprimulgus macrurus), Philippine Nightjar (Caprimulgus manillensis) and Sulawesi Nightjar (Caprimulgus celebensis), and all were formerly considered conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- atripennis Jerdon, 1845 - Western Ghats (Kerala north to southern Maharashtra) and eastern Ghats (Tamil Nadu north to Durgapur, West Bengal).
- aequabilis Ripley, 1945 - Sri Lanka.
