Subspecies
Caprimulgus cubanensis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Cuban Nightjar (Antrostomus cubanensis) and Hispaniolan Nightjar (Antrostomus ekmani) following Garrido and Reynard (1994), contra AOU (1998). This treatment is under review by the BirdLife Taxonomic Working Group.
May form superspecies with Hispaniolan Nightjar (Antrostomus ekmani), with which it was until recently considered conspecific, but notable differences in voice.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cubanensis (Lawrence, 1860) - Cuba.
insulaepinorum (Garrido, 1983) - I of Pines and Cayo Coco.
ekmani (Lönnberg, 1929) - Hispaniola. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Hispaniolan Nightjar (Antrostomus ekmani).
