Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Jamaican Poorwill (Siphonorhis americana), and these two form a superspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
brewsteri (Chapman, 1917) - Semiarid lowlands of Hispaniola and Gonāve I.
gonavensis Garrido, 2003 - Gonāve I.
Similar Species
Nighthawks are larger and have a very different flight. Cuban Nightjar (Antrostomus cubanensis) is larger with more extensive white at the tail corners and a buff rather than white chest-band.
