Clearing of lowland forest through logging is the main threat.

Subspecies
Aegotheles insignis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Feline Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles insignis) and Spangled Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles tatei) following Pratt (2000).

Possibly forms a superspecies with Feline Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles insignis) and Moluccan Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles crinifrons). Formerly treated as lowland subspecies of Feline Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles insignis), but recent studies indicate that it is a separate species.

No subspecies.
