Subspecies
Possibly forms superspecies with Jungle Owlet (Glaucidium radiatum). Although both present in Sri Lanka, they occupy different habitats. Formerly treated as subspecies of either Asian Barred Owlet (Glaucidium cuculoides) or Jungle Owlet (Glaucidium radiatum).
