Habits
Mainly nocturnal.

Voice
A prolonged series of barbet-like whistles, 'hoop hoop hoop wup-wup-wup pupupupupu' and a quavering trill, increasing steadily in volume, 'wu u u u u u u u'. Also various squawks, barks and churrs.

Subspecies
Possibly forms superspecies with Javan Owlet (Glaucidium castanopterum). Sometimes considered to include Javan Owlet (Glaucidium castanopterum) and Chestnut-backed Owlet (Glaucidium castanotum) as subspecies.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

cuculoides (Vigors, 1831) - Himalayas from north-eastern Pakistan and Kashmir east to western Sikkim.
austerum Ripley, 1948 - Eastern Sikkim, Bhutan, north-eastern Assam and north-western Myanmar.
rufescens Baker, ECS, 1926 - North-eastern India, Bangladesh and northern Myanmar.
bruegeli (Parrot, 1908) - Southern Myanmar and southern Thailand.
delacouri Ripley, 1948 - Northern Indochina.
deignani Ripley, 1948 - South-eastern Thailand and southern Indochina.
whiteleyi (Blyth, 1867) - Western, central and south-eastern China and north-eastern Vietnam.
persimile Hartert, 1910 - Hainan.
