Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, inland wetlands.
Argentina (B), Bolivia (B), Paraguay (B).
Chaco of southern Bolivia (Santa Cruz), western Paraguay and northern Argentina (south to Córdoba, San Luis and northern La Pampa).

Subspecies
Strix rufipes (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Rufous-legged Owl (Strix rufipes ) and Chaco Owl (Strix chacoensis ) following SACC (2005).
Usually treated as a subspecies of Rufous-legged Owl (Strix rufipes ).
No subspecies.
