Habitat
Mostly in good quality Cynometra forest. From sea-level - 400 m.
Kenya (B) (NB), Tanzania [United Republic of] (B) (NB).
Sokoke-Arabuku Forest in south-eastern Kenya, and north-eastern Tanzania (lowlands north of eastern Usambara Mts).

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat destruction and degradation is the main threat.

Probably forms superspecies with Sandy Scops-Owl (Otus icterorhynchus ).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
African Barred Owlet (Glaucidium capense ) which is much bigger with obviously barred, not vermiculated, underparts.
