Subspecies
Amazilia distans (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) is now considered a hybrid of White-chinned Sapphire (Hylocharis cyanus) and Glittering-throated Emerald (Amazilia fimbriata) following Weller and Schuchmann (1997).

Species name has alternatively been given as cyana or cyanea, but original name is a Greek noun, and is not variable. "Hylocharis pyropygia" is probably a hybrid of White-chinned Sapphire (Hylocharis cyanus) and subspecies pucherani of Glittering-bellied Emerald (Chlorostilbon lucidus). "Chlorostilbon hypocyaneus", known only from two trade skins from Bahia, may be a hybrid of White-chinned Sapphire (Hylocharis cyanus) with Blue-chinned Emerald (Chlorostilbon notatus), or a mutant of that species, or possibly even a valid species.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • viridiventris von Berlepsch, 1880   -  Northern and eastern Colombia, western and southern Venezuela and the Guianas to northern Brazil (to Mato Grosso and Maranhío).
  • rostrata Boucard, 1895   -  Eastern Peru, north-eastern Bolivia and western Brazil (Mato Grosso); probably eastern Ecuador.
  • conversa Zimmer, JT, 1950   -  Eastern Bolivia, northern Paraguay and south-western Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul).
  • cyanus (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Coastal eastern Brazil (Pernambuco to Rio de Janeiro).
  • griseiventris Grantsau, 1988   -  Coastal south-eastern Brazil (Sío Paulo) and north-eastern Argentina (Buenos Aires).
