Subspecies
Possibly forms a superspecies with Narrow-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon stenurus) and Green-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon alice). Subspecies euchloris has sometimes been considered a separate species, due mainly to suggestion of possible overlap in range, but poorly known. Forms "inexpectatus" and "auratus", known by single specimens from "Bogota" and "Peru" respectively, are apparently aberrant individuals of present species. "Ptochoptera iolaima", known from a specimen taken at Ypanema, Sío Paulo (Brazil), is probably a hybrid with Green-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon alice).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • euchloris (Reichenbach, 1854)   -  Central Colombia (western slope of eastern Andes south to Huila, and eastern slope in Santander).
  • poortmani (Bourcier, 1843)   -  Eastern Colombia (eastern slope of eastern Andes, from Boyacá south to western Meta) and north-western Venezuela (Mérida and Táchira).
