Subspecies
Horus Swift (Apus horus) and Loanda Swift (Apus toulsoni) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include toulsoni as a subspecies of Horus Swift (Apus horus).
Taxonomic status of form "toulsoni" of north-western Angola and Zimbabwe is highly controversial, and it has been considered a full species, but is probably best treated as a dark morph within nominate subspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
horus (Heuglin, 1869) - Central Ethiopia, central-southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, and north-western Uganda to Burundi and eastern Zaire; Zambia to south-western Cape (South Africa); more isolated populations in Nigeria, northern Cameroon, western Chad, western and east-central Sudan, extreme western Zaire and north-western Angola.
fuscobrunneus Brooke, 1971 - South-western Angola. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Loanda Swift (Apus toulsoni).
