Subspecies
Chaetura chapmani (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Chapman's Swift (Chaetura chapmani) and Mato Grosso Swift (Chaetura viridipennis) following SACC (2005).
Previously considered conspecific with Chimney Swift (Chaetura pelagica) and Vaux's Swift (Chaetura vauxi). Recent proposal to raise viridipennis to full species, but this is not universally accepted. Nominate subspecies may consist of two disjunct populations, representing different subspecies, one in lowlands from central Panama to northern Colombia, the other from eastern Venezuela to north-eastern Brazil, with intervening gap (western and northern Venezuela) occupied by Vaux's Swift (Chaetura vauxi).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
chapmani Hellmayr, 1907 - Central Panama through Colombia, Venezuela and the Guianas to north-eastern Brazil.
viridipennis Cherrie, 1916 - Tropical eastern Peru to eastern Bolivia and western Amazonian Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mato Grosso Swift (Chaetura viridipennis).
