Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,000 m.

Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Chaetura spinicauda (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Band-rumped Swift (Chaetura spinicaudus) and Costa Rican Swift (Chaetura fumosa) following AOU (1998). Gender agreement of Chaetura spinicaudus follows David and Gosselin (2002a).

Formerly placed in genus Acanthylis with following three species. Subspecies fumosa previously given species status.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • fumosa Salvin, 1870   -  Costa Rica, western Panama and northern Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Costa Rican Swift (Chaetura fumosa).
  • aetherodroma Wetmore, 1951   -  Eastern Panama to southern Ecuador.
  • spinicaudus (Temminck, 1839)   -  Eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and northern Brazil (northern Amapa).
  • latirostris Zimmer and Phelps, 1952   -  Southern Venezuela to Brazilian border and Delta Amacuro.
  • aethalea Todd, 1937   -  Central Brazil.
