Nest
Composed of ferns, rootlets, grasses and lichens, bonded together with saliva, in cave. In Colonies.

Subspecies
Genus often merged into Collocalia. Forms superspecies with Philippine Swiftlet (Aerodramus mearnsi), Moluccan Swiftlet (Aerodramus infuscatus), White-rumped Swiftlet (Aerodramus spodiopygius) and Australian Swiftlet (Aerodramus terraereginae). Previously placed in composite species Mascarene Swiftlet (Aerodramus francicus) or alternatively in Uniform Swiftlet (Aerodramus vanikorensis) and considered conspecific with White-rumped Swiftlet (Aerodramus spodiopygius) by some authors.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • hirundinaceus (Stresemann, 1914)   -  New Guinea.
  • baru (Stresemann & Paludan, 1932)   -  Yapen Island, above 500 m.
  • excelsus (Ogilvie-Grant, 1914)   -  Snow Mountains and Cartenz peaks of Irian Jaya above 1600 m.
