Subspecies
Forms a parapatric species pair with Black-headed Parrot (Pionites melanocephalus).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
xanthomerius (Sclater, PL, 1858) - Eastern Peru and northern Bolivia to western Brazil south of Amazon. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-legged Parrot (Pionites xanthomerius).
xanthurus Todd, 1925 - Brazil south of Amazon from R Purús and R Juruá to R Madeira. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Yellow-tailed Parrot (Pionites xanthurus).
leucogaster (Kuhl, 1820) - Northern Brazil from R Madeira to Maranhío.
