Subspecies
Forms a parapatric species pair with Green-thighed Parrot (Pionites leucogaster).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
melanocephalus (Linnaeus, 1758) - South-eastern Colombia to north-eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and Brazil north of Amazon.
pallidus (von Berlepsch, 1889) - Southern Colombia western and east of Andes south to eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru.
