Subspecies
Pyrrhura leucotis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into White-eared Parakeet (Pyrrhura leucotis), Grey-breasted Parakeet (Pyrrhura griseipectus) and Goias Parakeet (Pyrrhura pfrimeri) following SACC (2005).

Claimed to form a superspecies with closely related Painted Parakeet (Pyrrhura picta), but interposing ranges unusual in such an arrangement.

Proposed subspecies (or even species) "hypoxantha" probably based on aberrant specimens of Green-cheeked Parakeet (Pyrrhura molinae).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • emma Salvadori, 1891   -  North-western Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Venezuelan Parakeet (Pyrrhura emma).
  • auricularis Zimmer and Phelps, 1949   -  North-eastern Venezuela.
  • pfrimeri Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920   -  Central Brazil (Goiás). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Goias Parakeet (Pyrrhura pfrimeri).
  • griseipectus Salvadori, 1900   -  North-eastern Brazil (Ceará). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-breasted Parakeet (Pyrrhura griseipectus).
  • leucotis (Kuhl, 1820)   -  Eastern Brazil from Bahia to Sío Paulo.

Similar Species
Subtly different from Grey-breasted Parakeet (Pyrrhura griseipectus) and Goias Parakeet (Pyrrhura pfrimeri), in coloration of the pileum and having a creamy-buff auricular patch.
