Subspecies
Aratinga holochlora (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was previously split into Green Parakeet (Psittacara holochlorus), Socorro Parakeet (Psittacara brevipes), Red-throated Parakeet (Psittacara rubritorquis) and Pacific Parakeet (Aratinga strenua) following Stotz et al. (1996), contra AOU (1998). Following a review by the BirdLife Taxonomic Working Group (BTWG), Socorro Parakeet (Psittacara brevipes) and Red-throated Parakeet (Psittacara rubritorquis) are retained as species contra AOU (1998), but Pacific Parakeet (Aratinga strenua) has been lumped with Green Parakeet (Psittacara holochlorus) contra AOU (1998). The BTWG recognises Red-throated Parakeet (Psittacara rubritorquis) and Socorro Parakeet (Psittacara brevipes) as species separate from Green Parakeet (Psittacara holochlorus) for the reasons given in Howell and Webb (1995).
Often considered conspecific with Socorro Parakeet (Psittacara brevipes) and Red-throated Parakeet (Psittacara rubritorquis). Subspecies strenua often regarded as a separate species.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
brewsteri (Nelson, 1928) - North-western Mexico.
holochlorus (P. L. Sclater, 1859) - North-east to southern Mexico.
strenuus (Ridgway, 1915) - Southern Mexico to northern Nicaragua. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Pacific Parakeet (Aratinga strenua).
brevipes (Lawrence, 1871) - Socorro Island. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Socorro Parakeet (Psittacara brevipes).
rubritorquis (Sclater, PL, 1887) - Guatemala, Honduras,, Nicaragua. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Red-throated Parakeet (Psittacara rubritorquis).
