Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, dry savanna.
Argentina (B), Brazil (B), Paraguay (B), Uruguay (B).
South-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, western Uruguay, north-eastern Argentina.

Possibly extinct.
Habitat destruction through clearance for agriculture or the suppression of regeneration by colonists' cattle, trade and hunting are the main threats.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Lear's Macaw (Anodorhynchus leari) which has a bluer head and is not sympatric, but specimens in trade could be confused. Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) which is considerably larger and bulkier, more violet-blue in coloration and yellow lappets extend along the base of the mandible and also not sympatric.
