North-central to south-central Brazil ranging into extreme north-western Paraguay and eastern Bolivia; formerly present in Amapá, northern Brazil, and possibly still so.

Estimated population is 6,500 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Illegal trade, local hunting for food and feathers, habitat loss for cattle-ranching and hydroelectric power schemes, are the main threats.

Voice
Loud, raucous croaking and screeching calls, less harsh than Ara sp, often given in pairs.

Nest
In large tree-cavities and on cliffs.
Subspecies
Populations in south of range have been separated as subspecies maximiliani but differences minute and clinal.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Lear's Macaw (Anodorhynchus leari) which is much smaller and only escaped birds could occur in the same range.
