Coast and islands of south-western and southern Australia, from Shark Bay to south-eastern South Australia.

Habits
In pairs or small flocks.
Food
Seeds and fruits of grasses and herbaceous plants, especially halophytic plants.
Voice
Sharp, tinkling, 'tsee, tzit-tseit', usually uttered in flight.

Breeding Season (Guide)
August - February.
Nest
In a hole in a cliff or in a cavity under a rock.
Eggs (Guide)
4 or 5; white; ellipsoidal; about 24 x 20 mm. Incubation: about 18 days; by female.
Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 30 days. They continue to maintain a loose association with their parents while in the flock.
Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- petrophila (Gould, 1841) - Coastal WA from Shark Bay to western Great Australian Bight, SA.
- zietzi (Mathews, 1912) - Coastal SA from Eyre Peninsula to Adelaide.
Similar Species
Elegant Parrot (Neophema elegans)
Smilar size. Brighter. Dark blue forehead band narrowly edged pale-blue, extending just past the eye. Face yellowish.
Blue-winged Parrot (Neophema chrysostoma)
Similar size. Has deep blue upper and under wing coverts. Dark blue forehead band stops at the eye. Face yellowish. Has yellow patch behind eye.
Orange-bellied Parrot (Neophema chrysogaster)
Similar size. Mid-blue forehead band stops at the eye. Face yellow-green.
