Habitat
Tall, tussock grassland and sedges. From sea-level - 300 m.
New Zealand (B) (NB).

Estimated population is 2,000 - 3,000 (2010) and stable.
Status VU
Competition for food by introduced mice may be a threat. Accidental introduction of predators such as rats Rattus spp., cats and mustelids Mustela spp. is a potential threat.

Wide range of chattering calls, lower-pitched than other Cyanoramphus species.
