Habitat
Lowland primary forest, but also scattered fruiting trees in open areas and secondary and heavily degraded forest. From 300 - 700 m, occasionally above 1,000 m.

Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Forest habitat loss and possibly trapping for the cage-bird trade are the main threats.

Voice
Raucous squawks interspersed with screeches and musical phrases.
Similar Species
Montane Racquet-tail (Prioniturus montanus) which has blue on head. Possible confusion with Tanygnathus parrots, but is smaller, longer-tailed (with racquets) and has pale, not red, bill.
