Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Geelvink Pygmy-parrot (Micropsitta geelvinkiana) and Buff-faced Pygmy-parrot (Micropsitta pusio).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- keiensis (Salvadori, 1875) - Kai Is and Aru Is.
- chloroxantha Oberholser, 1917 - Western Papuan Is, Vogelkop and Onin Peninsula, western Irian Jaya.
- viridipectus (Rothschild, 1911) - Southern New Guinea.
