Subspecies
Closely related to Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona). Other described subspecies are isthmica (Honduras to eastern Panama, Pearl Is and northern Colombia), hellmayri (western Colombia), ecuadorensis (Ecuador) and croteta (Trinidad and Tobago), but all are poorly distinguished.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • hachisukai (Laubmann, 1941)   -  Extreme southern Arizona, south-western New Mexico and west-central Texas to north-western Mexico.
  • septentrionalis (Sharpe, 1892)   -  South-central Texas south to Colombia and western Venezuela.
  • cabanisii (Tschudi, 1846)   -  Western Colombia and western Ecuador southern on west of Andes to northern Chile.
  • americana (Gmelin, 1788)   -  East of Andes from Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago south to north-eastern Bolivia and across northern Brazil (Rondônia, Amazonas, Pará, Bahia).
  • mathewsii Laubmann, 1927   -  Southern Brazil and southern Bolivia to northern Argentina (Mendoza, northern Buenos Aires).
