Mexico and Belize south to Colombia and Venezuela, southern on east of Andes to central Argentina (Buenos Aires, La Rioja).

Subspecies
Closely related to Green Kingfisher (Chloroceryle americana ). Northern populations sometimes recognized as subspecies mexicana on basis of larger size and slight plumage differences, but variation is clinal.
