Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Giant Kingfisher (Megaceryle maxima), Crested Kingfisher (Megaceryle lugubris) and Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon). .

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • torquata (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Extreme southern Texas and north-western Mexico south to Peru, south-eastern Bolivia, north-eastern Argentina and Uruguay, also Margarita I (off northern Venezuela) and Trinidad.
  • stictipennis (Lawrence, 1885)   -  Guade­lou­­pe, Dominica, Martinique and Grenada, possibly also St Kitts.
  • stellata (Meyen, 1834)   -  Southern Chile and Argentina to Tierra del Fuego; migrates north to central Chile and north-eastern Argentina.
