Aleutian Is and central-western Alaska (Seward Peninsula) east through central Canada to Labrador and Newfoundland, and south throughout USA to southern California and southern Texas and northern coast of Gulf of Mexico. Winter range south to eastern Panama, northern Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Galapagos Is and the Caribbean to Trinidad.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Crested Kingfisher (Megaceryle lugubris), Giant Kingfisher (Megaceryle maxima) and Ringed Kingfisher (Megaceryle torquata). Proposed subspecies caurina on basis of larger size is unwarranted due to variation across entire range.
