Voice
Song is an upslurred, ringing 'kweet...', repeated. Call is a series of six sweet, trilling phrases, each phrase lasting about 0.5 s, the series about 5 - 6 s.

Nest
In a hollow excavated in a low earthen bank or in a rotten tree-trunk.
Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Blue-capped Kingfisher (Actenoides hombroni) and Spotted Kingfisher (Actenoides lindsayi), and all sometimes considered conspecific.
