Subspecies
Genus often merged into Halcyon. Forms a superspecies with Sacred Kingfisher (Todiramphus sanctus), Cinnamon-banded Kingfisher (Todiramphus australasia), Chattering Kingfisher (Todiramphus tutus), Tuamotu Kingfisher (Todiramphus gambieri) and Marquesas Kingfisher (Todiramphus godeffroyi).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- veneratus (Gmelin, 1788) - Tahiti (Society Is).
- youngi Sharpe, 1892 - Moorea (Society Is). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Moorea Kingfisher (Todiramphus youngi).
