Habitat
Closed-canopy of monsoon forest. Also in secondary habitats such as gardens and cultivated areas, provided that sufficient canopy cover remains. From sea-level - 700 m.
Indonesia (B), Timor-Leste (B) (NB).

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat loss and degradation are the main threats.

Subspecies
Genus often merged into Halcyon . Forms a superspecies with Sacred Kingfisher (Todiramphus sanctus ), Chattering Kingfisher (Todiramphus tutus ), Tahiti Kingfisher (Todiramphus veneratus ), Tuamotu Kingfisher (Todiramphus gambieri ) and Marquesas Kingfisher (Todiramphus godeffroyi ).
Has been considered conspecific with Chattering Kingfisher (Todiramphus tutus ).
Subspecies interpositus included in dammerianus by some authors.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
australasia (Vieillot, 1818) - Lombok, Sumba, Wetar and Timor (Lesser Sundas).
tringorum (Hellmayr, 1914) - Romang (eastern Lesser Sundas).
dammerianus (Hartert, 1900) - Damar and Babar (eastern Lesser Sundas).
interpositus (Hartert, 1904) - Leti and Moa (eastern Lesser Sundas).
odites (Peters, JL, 1945) - Tanimbar Is.
