Subspecies
Possibly closest to Mountain Trogon (Trogon mexicanus), Elegant Trogon (Trogon elegans), Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris), Masked Trogon (Trogon personatus) and Black-throated Trogon (Trogon rufus). DNA studies suggest, however, that nearest relatives may be Violaceous Trogon (Trogon violaceus) and Green-backed Trogon (Trogon viridis). Formerly current name variegatus is a junior synonym of curucui, whereas bolivianus is a synonym of peruvianus.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

peruvianus Swainson, 1838 - Foot of eastern Andes from Colombia south to north-western Bolivia (R Beni), and east to north-central Brazil (R Tapaj�s).
curucui Linnaeus, 1766 - Central and eastern Brazil.
behni Gould, 1875 - Eastern Bolivia, south-western Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina.
